It was opened in November 2009. The development of Birsa Munda Park was a result of various schemes viz. MGNREGS, RSVY, Tourism Department, SGSY, etc.

History of Dhanbad
Earlier Dhanbad was a subdivision of Manbhum district. In 1928, it was proposed to merge the old Dhanbad and Chandankiyari divisions to form Dhanbad.
Dhanbad district came into existence on 01.11.1956 due to the notification of the State Reconstruction Commission on 24.10.1956. Under this notification, Chas and Chandankiyari police station areas of Purulia subdivision of former district Madhuban of Bihar were transferred to West Bengal.
The sub-district status of Dhanbad was changed to district level, along with the creation of the post of Deputy Commissioner. Earlier Dhanbad was known as Dhanbaid. On the initiative of ICS officer Mr. Luby, it was officially renamed as Dhanbad.

Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875 in Ilihatu village of Jharkhand. He was born in a tribal family. Birsa Munda’s name holds an important place in Indian history.
He contributed to the country as a freedom fighter and tribal leader. He revolted against the British rule and fought many struggles to protect the rights of his community.
