Introduction

A large lake was constructed through a spill channel of seven different water levels located in Hazaribag district of Jharkhand state. This lake was constructed by the British. The main purpose of this construction was to build a jail here to imprison Shri Jayaprakash Narayan.

For which a lot of soil was required. Which was taken from three different places. Later, a spill channel was constructed to overcome the shortage of water by making it different levels. Which is known as a huge man-made lake in today’s time. Which is recognized as a heritage of Hazaribag district.

Historical background of Hazaribag Lake

When this prison was built by the British in 1831 to imprison Jayaprakash Narayan, three pits were dug here. With time, these three pits turned into seven pits. Today, these seven pits got divided and a lake was formed.

History of Shri Jayaprakash Narayan

Jaiprakash Narayan was also known as Loknayak. He was born on 11 October 1902 in Sitabdiara village of Bihar district. He did his primary education from Bihar itself. Later he went to America for higher education. There he studied economics and sociology.

After completing his education, he returned and joined the Indian National Congress Party. In the 1930s, he participated in the freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. During the same time, Jayaprakash Narayan was imprisoned in Hazaribag Jail in 1932 by the British.

While in jail, he inspired many prisoners with his struggle and courage. He also participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942. Jayaprakash Narayan has an important place in the history of the Indian freedom struggle and the socialist movement. He died in Patna on 8 October 1979 due to illness.
